The broadest participation figure on this page is target shooting: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reported 47 million firearms target shooters age six and older in 2022. The same federal survey family counted 14.4 million hunters age 16 and older, who logged 241 million hunting days that year.
The federal manufacturing report recorded 2,823,770 rifles manufactured and disposed of in commerce in 2024. That report measures manufacturing activity, not retail purchases or the number of individual owners.
ATF's 2025 statistical update also reports 5,457,760 firearms imported in 2024, including 1,053,626 rifles. Import totals are separate from domestic manufacturing and should not be added together as a retail-sales figure.
The FBI recorded 26,123,215 firearm-related NICS background checks in 2025. A background check should not be read as one firearm sale: the system is used for several transaction types and state processes.
The NSSF economic-impact report attributes $91.65 billion in 2024 U.S. economic activity and 382,995 full-time-equivalent jobs to the firearm and ammunition industry. The same report estimates 3.9 million new gun owners in 2024 and nearly $29 billion in inflation-adjusted Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund payments since 1937. Because it is an industry-commissioned study, it is identified as such here and should be cited with that context.
ATF also reported 5,817,780 firearms processed by its National Firearms Act Division during fiscal year 2025. That is an administrative processing total, not a count of retail sales or privately owned firearms.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reported in 2025 that Pittman-Robertson funds have supported more than 800 public target ranges. That is a count of supported facilities, not a count of all target ranges in the country.
